Today is both World Suicide Prevention Day and R U OK? Day.
Two important moments in our calendar. But the conversations they inspire matter far beyond today.
This year’s World Suicide Prevention Day theme, Changing the Narrative on Suicide, asks us to think differently about how we understand, talk about and respond to suicide.
At LifeChanger, we believe part of changing that narrative is changing where the conversation begins, not only when a young person reaches crisis. But years earlier.
In the classrooms, sporting clubs, homes and communities where young people are forming their sense of who they are, where they belong and what they’re capable of.
Because while we know young people are navigating a world filled with complex challenges, we also see something else every day.
We see their courage. Their empathy. Their resilience. Their capacity to lead and lift each other.
Last week, one of our facilitators watched a Year 10 student mentoring a group of Year 8s through our Awaken the Hero program.
Without being prompted, they stepped forward. They shared their own stories. They helped guide the session. They supported their younger peers.
“It was so inspiring,” our facilitator said.
It was a simple moment, but one that captured what prevention can look like in practice.
Creating opportunities for young people to discover their strengths, build confidence and connection, and realise the positive impact they can have on the people around them.
Because sometimes young people just need the right people, experiences and conversations to help them recognise the courage, resilience and potential that already exists within them.
That’s why our work starts early. Building connection, self-awareness, resilience, purpose and belonging before challenges become crises.
Changing the narrative on suicide isn’t only about how we respond when someone is struggling. It’s also about the world we create around young people long before that moment.
A world where they feel seen.
Where they feel connected.
Where they know they matter.
And where every young person is supported to believe in themselves, navigate life’s challenges and realise their full potential.
