THE POWER OF PLAY: LOCALE KIDS FEATURE

Between school drop-offs, busy schedules and the endless to-do list, it’s no surprise many parents feel stretched. It can often feel like quality family time needs to be planned or set aside, when in reality the moments that matter most are usually the simplest.

Play is much more than just fun – it’s one of the most powerful ways families connect. It’s how children feel seen, safe and understood, whether that’s a crazy dance in the kitchen, a quick round of hide-and-seek or a playful chat in the car. These everyday moments create space to reset and reconnect in a way that feels natural and unforced.

Research shows that play helps build emotional safety, resilience and the foundation for future relationships – all of which shape a child’s sense of self and belonging. And when parents allow themselves to be playful, they don’t just reconnect with their children, they reconnect with themselves too. 

While these moments start at home, they’re part of something much bigger. Building connection, confidence and emotional awareness early in life is central to how young people develop resilience. This sits at the heart of the work LifeChanger Foundation does, supporting thousands of young people in schools across Australia to build self-awareness, positive relationships and a strong sense of identity.

To support families in creating more of these everyday moments, LifeChanger Foundation has developed the Parent Connection Kit – a free, evidence-based digital resource designed to spark meaningful connection through practical activities. Created in collaboration with registered Clinical Psychologist Dr Samantha Beeken, the kit includes short three-minute modules tailored for children aged five to twelve, covering ten family-focused topics alongside three modules designed specifically for parents.

The most powerful gift parents can give a child is being present. It’s not about how much time is spent together — it’s about the quality of that time. Play doesn’t require more time, money or planning; it’s already woven into everyday family life. It just needs to be recognised and embraced for what it is: a simple but powerful way for families to connect.
