Sock Out Sunday: Taking a Stand for Youth Mental Health

There are moments in life that call for action, and this is one of them. Australia is in the midst of a youth mental health crisis.

The statistics are alarming and heartbreaking: mental health disorders in young Australians have surged by 47% over the past 15 years.

Youth suicide is now the leading cause of death among young Australians, accounting for one-third of all adolescent deaths. Even more troubling, for every young person lost to suicide, there are an estimated 100 to 200 more who attempt it.

At LifeChanger, we refuse to stand by silently. We believe in empowering young people with the courage to thrive. That’s why Sock Out Sunday is more than just a fun day — it’s a call to action, a rallying point for a community that believes in hope, resilience, and connection.

The Crisis We Face

Our young people are navigating a world riddled with challenges. Screen time, global unrest, cost of living pressures, and climate anxiety are just a few of the heavy weights they carry.

Recent statistics show that:

  • Nearly 40% of young Australians aged 16–24 experienced a mental health disorder in the previous year [2].
  • Two in five young women and one in four young men aged 16–24 experienced an anxiety disorder [2].
  • 26% of people aged 16–24 experienced high or very high psychological distress, with young women (34%) twice as affected as young men (13%) [1].
  • 35.9% of secondary school students reported high levels of anxiety, depression, or both in 2023 [2].
  • 11% of people aged 12–17 have ever deliberately self-harmed, with 17% of 16–17 year old females self-harming in the past year [1].
  • Mental ill-health rates among Australian youth have risen 50% in less than two decades [5].
  • 63–75% of mental health conditions begin before the age of 25, with peak onset at 15 years old [5].
  • Young people (12–24) account for 22% of all Medicare-subsidised mental health service use, despite being only 12% of the population [4].
  • Youth aged 12–24 made up 25% of emergency department presentations for mental health issues [4].
  • Suicide remains a critical issue, with 461 deaths among young people aged 15–24 in 2019 [4].
  • Cost of living and social media pressures are significant contributors to anxiety and stress among young people [6].

If these numbers shock you, good. They should.

They demand our attention, our voices, and our action.

Connection is PART OF the Answer

As life becomes so isolating and overwhelming, connection remains our greatest superpower. Connection is stronger than fear, more enduring than uncertainty.

"the strongest predictor of how long someone lives isn't exercise or diet; it's connection."

Sock Out Sunday is about community. It's about showing up, being counted, and sending a powerful message that no young person should ever feel alone.

It's about raising awareness and critical funds to help deliver LifeChanger’s holistic, preventative youth mental health programs to the young people who need it most.

How You Can Take Action

  • Wear your Socks Loud and Proud - On Sock Out Sunday, wear your Stand Together socks - OR get out there in your brightest, craziest socks to spark conversations about youth mental health.
  • Get Social - Share your socks (and your support) on social media, tagging @lifechangerfoundation and using #SockOutSunday.
  • Donate or Fundraise - Every dollar raised helps LifeChanger reach more young people with programs that build resilience, optimism, and connection. Together, we can end the youth mental health crisis.
  • Start Conversations - Start with 18 seconds. Research tells us we spend, on average, just 18 seconds a day in meaningful conversation with our kids (Eighteen Seconds). Today, aim for more. Connection starts with listening, validating, and simply being there.
  • Become a LifeChanger - You can go beyond Sock Out Sunday. Become a mentor, advocate, or champion in your community. LifeChanger’s programs equip communities to better support young people’s mental, emotional, and social wellbeing.

Why It Matters

Youth mental health is not someone else’s problem. It’s all of ours. It’s about the teenager in your neighbourhood, the child in your school, the young adult you know who is searching for hope.

By standing together on Sock Out Sunday, we send a clear message: we care, we see you, and we are here to help.

Let's turn compassion into action. Let’s change lives together.
